Creating a Steel Material in 3ds Max

In this tutorial we will explain how to create metals like steel, gold and chrome.

We shall do this entire task using Material editor. We can find material editor by pressing “M” from the key board. This will open in the shape of the Window. Here we are given many empty slots, pick up among one of them. First of all change the name of the material. Also change the shader model of the material as multi-layer.

Next we shall select the diffuse color as black. To give the shining we adjust the “Level” from specular layer. Similarly set the value also in the second layer. There is a section named “Maps”. Select that command and its map browser will open. We shall find reflection and click on it. There will be two icon Map and mask. Now we have two new slots. Make the mask slot as Fresnel and adjust it in Mix curve. Move the graph rate to the upward. Now although we have nothing on the screen. Go to creating object and choose a Sphere as Demonstration of Steel material. Make a copy of that object at three different places.

Take a plane and drag it on entire objects. Move the object above the grid. Now select any one and then go to material editor and click on Assign material to selection. We have three objects because we could show the difference between steel and other metal.  Just close the material editor and go to rendering and render it. This will show the best and actual result of the project.
