Create a Terrain with Soft Selection

In this tutorial you are going to learn how to create a terrain with soft selection.

To start a tutorial takes a plane with high number of segments. Go to top view port and maximize it. Choose plane and drag it on the view port.

Go to modifier panel and modify its parameters. After this view it prospective views port. Right click on the object and then choose convert to Editable poly. Click on editable poly sub object selection mode and in drop down list choose polygon. Go to top view and select it in the middle of object. Press simply F4 from key board to see selected polygon and use Z to zoom in the object. After doing this changing, scroll down the modifier panel and find paint soft selection. Choose brush size for painting. Match the border color with the middle. Now you see there is another option to paint deformation. Click on that button and than choose push and pull. Here it also requires modifying its setting. Set it according to your project.

Then using right click and drag the mouse cursor and you will see the outputs. The output will be in up and down position. Another thing to notice is the color effect is more in higher level and less at lower level. Using these tools you can also create mountain. This effect is in mainly use in game and movie effects.
