Video-Simulating a Cartoon Rocket with Rigid Bodies

In this 3d animation class lesson you will learn how to make 3d animation of the rocket in 3d animation modeling software Maya using one of the best features of the 3d animation in Maya that is Dynamics.

Dynamics are the animation of special natural effect like Soft / Rigid Bodies, Field like gravity, air, and Effect like fluid, hair or fur and many more. Maya Dynamics also provides attributes of these Dynamics features which can edited and modified in using channel box, option box of the tools or commands being used in 3d animation. Dynamics is rich feature for 3d animation based on natural phenomenon in 3d modeling animation software Maya here in cartoon rocket stimulation animation lesson you will learn basics of the 3d dynamic in very interesting and comprehensive way in Maya. Here you will learn how to edit an animation with Dynamic effect in Maya, ground is passive rigid body and rocket is active rigid body at some frames, passive rigid behaves like earth and do no move here as active rigid body moves as rocket here.

Steps:

  1. Once your 3d rocket model is ready to stimulate, change menu set to Dynamics, increase the number of frames to 480 in range slider for longer running 3d animation. Set key by pressing‘s’ key at first and last frame.
  2. Select the ground model go to soft/rigid bodies and choose passive rigid body option box, reset setting from edit menu there and then put value of static and dynamic friction as 0.5 and bounces as 0.2.
  3. Then select the rocket body and again go to the passive rigid body option box, just change the value of mass to 100.
    Selecting rocket go to field menu and select the gravity field.
  4. When you want to edit your 3d animation at any frame then after putting the desire value right click on attribute name and click on ‘key selected’ option. This make the change as part of your 3d animation.
  5. Then go to the frame when your rocket leaves the ground and then in the channel box > Shapes > Rigid body nodes and put value of 1 in active attribute. This will make your rocket active rigid body at that frame.
  6. Now for making effect of gravity to make rocket fall on ground after the y impulse which makes your rocket fly up, you have to increase the value of gravity as 50, and impulse as 1000 at the frame when you want you rocket fall down, then at last frame impulse-y should be 0.
