Video-How to Animate 3D Gear in Maya

Autodesk Maya is one of the best 3d animations modeling software application for 3d mechanical modeling and 3d animation along with other branches of 3d modeling. Here in this 3d animation lesson we have gear 3d model and you will learn how to make 3d animation of the gear in the 3d animation modeling software using Maya Dynamics, you can use other 3d animation making ways like assigning key to attribute like rotate x, y or z, you can manually rotate the 3d gears model with using rotate tool and setting keys but here you will learn the easiest, perfect and the most efficient way of the 3d animation modeling in 3d animation modeling program Maya using Maya Dynamics.

    Steps:

  1. Change the menu set to Dynamic if you do not have then go to Window menu setting preferences and the Plug-in Manager and mark the Dynamic Plug-in.
  2. After changing menu set to Dynamics, Go to Soft/Rigid bodies menu in the main menu, the first option is Active rigid body, this option makes you 3d object rigid and active which means you can create effect of motion with specific velocity, spin, friction, change its mass, rotation, translation, pulse motion and so on many other option which you can see in the channel box.
  3. For example you have car gears and you want to move two gears so that clockwise motion of one gear makes other interlocked gear move in anticlockwise direction. Select one gear then go to Soft/Rigid bodies in the Main menu of Dynamic menus set click on Active rigid body open its option box and reset all the option from its edit menu. Then click on create.
  4. Then for example put value of initial spin y to 200 in the channel box press ctrl + A once for opening channel box and you will find this attribute in Channel box > Shapes > rigid body.
  5. Then select the other 3d model of gear which is interlocked with this one, make it active rigid body from Soft/Rigid bodies and then put it value as -200 in initial spin y attribute.
  6. Why -200 because its rotation is opposite to the first gear.
